Northwestern prof, Oxford staffer extradited to Chicago

Wyndham Lathem, a Northwestern University microbiologist accused of stabbing a man to death, and Andrew Warren, an acquaintance from Oxford University, have been charged with first degree murder after being extradited to Chicago.

He and 56-year-old Oxford University financial officer Andrew Warren are charged with first-degree murder in the death of Trenton James Cornell-Duranleau, a MI native who had been working in Chicago.

WGN-TV reported that neighbors said Lathem and Cornell-Duranleau were in a relationship. Autopsy results indicated that methamphetamine and a small amount of alcohol were found in his body.

Cornell-Duranleau's death occurred the same day one of the suspects walked into the public library of Lake Geneva, a Wisconsin resort city about an hour's drive from Chicago, and made a $1,000 cash donation in the victim's name. She said Lathem was supposed to stab Warren to death as Warren was shooting and killing him.

Cornell-Duranleau went to sleep in Lathem's apartment, at which point Lathem texted Warren that it was time to kill Cornell-Duranleau, prosecutors said.

Lathem is a former researcher at Washington University in St. Louis.

Warren, who says online he lives in Swindon, Wiltshire, has been suspended from his job as senior treasury assistant.

Around 5 a.m. on July 26, witnesses heard fighting and screaming coming from Lathem's apartment, Deenihan said.

Lathem, 43, had been held in a California jail since turning himself in August 4 in California.

Prosecutors said Lathem and Warren had connected in an Internet chatroom about their fantasies: their plan included killing someone and then themselves.

"What I can tell you is it was not domestic in nature like a husband-wife, or boyfriend-boyfriend, or a love triangle; that was not the motive", Deenihan said at a news conference on Sunday, before the suspects appeared in court. "It was a little bit more dark and disturbing", Chicago police Detective Cmdr.

The stab wounds to Cornell-Duranleau included 21 to the chest and abdomen, and 26 in the back, as well as multiple cuts on his hands.

CNN has not seen the video and police are not releasing it, but Guglielmi, the Chicago police spokesman, said Lathem could be seen "apologizing for his involvement in the murder".

Lathem had told Warren to take video of the killing using his cellphone, but Warren did not end up recording it, the prosecutor said.

Wyndham Lathem, 43, and Andrew Warren, 56, are charged with first-degree murder. Warren was apprehended across the bay in San Francisco by local police the same night.
