BHU lathicharge: FIR registered against 1000 students for arson

Reacting on comments, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Ashutosh said, "Now BJP leaders are saying BHU girls protest is like naxalite thing".

Meanwhile, the police on Monday has filed a first information report (FIR) against almost 1000 BHU students for arson, media reported.

Following a lathicharge by police on students protesting against increasing eve-teasing incidents in Banaras Hindu University campus, Station Officer (SO) Lanka, CO Bhelupur and one Additional City Magistrate (ACM) removed prima facie for lathicharge.

"What were they (girls) asking for, they were asking from the university to take notice of the sexual harassment incident and do justice. Stringent action should be taken against the guilty".

All India Students' Association's national president Sucheta De said, "The BHU movement is a declaration of freedom for all women across the country". On Saturday night, the irate students took to streets, later pelting stones and set many vehicles on fire.

She herself received head injuries while saving her wards from the police canes.

Students claimed that the police assaulted without provocation and even tried to enter the women's hostel, NDTV reported.

She alleged women students of BHU were "molested" thrice - "first when three motorcycle-borne men molested an Arts Faculty student, second when police barged into their hostels and third when the vice-chancellor shamed the victim".

It is very bad on the side of police to have a lathi charge on the female students who were protesting on the eve teasing issue. This typically retrograde and patriarchal attitude of the University authorities shows emboldening of conservative forces which are getting direct support from BJP-led Uttar Pradesh Government. The student has also alleged that when she informed the incident to the hostel warden, her character was also questioned. Police resorted to lathicharge to disperse the students. The demands include basic student rights such as the formation of GSCASH (Gender Sensitisation Committee against Sexual Harassment), employment of female guards, and strict action in molestation cases and so on. The police action against the students on the university campus has been criticized by various parties, including the Congress and the Samwajwadi Party.

"I am going to look into the shortcomings and we will involve girls studying in the university", he said. The woman alleged that security guards, about 100 metres from where the incident happened, did nothing to stop them. Meanwhile, Congress leaders Ghulam Nabi Azad and Raj Babbar also rushed to empathise with the protesting students.
