Apologizing to London, Uber CEO vows to make changes to keep license

The Mayor of London has accused Uber of bringing "unfair pressure" onto Transport for London (TfL) following the body's decision to ban the ride-hailing company from the capital.

Meanwhile Reuters reports that key Uber rival Lyft could well be on their way into Britain: "Lyft, Uber's closest us rival in the taxi-hailing business, met repeatedly with officials from London's transport regulator over the past year, a sign it may be targeting the city for global expansion", it reported.

The letter by Khosrowshahi, who became CEO of Uber in August, stated that the American company would be appealing against the decision, but did admit "we do so with the knowledge that we must also change".

Across the United Kingdom, millions of people use Uber's app to get from A to B and thousands of licensed drivers rely on Uber to make a living.

Uber can appeal the decision, and will be able to operate until all forms of appeal have been exhausted.

In a message to staff, Uber's chief executive Dara Khosrowshahi said: "It's worth examining how we got here". Uber has now apologised for its mistakes in an open letter and has offered to make changes and address the various criticisms.

The license will expire at the end of the month but Uber has already said it will appeal the decision.

On Friday, just hours after Greater London's transport authorities decided not to renew Uber's operating license, citing a lack of corporate responsibility, Uber wound up for its first punch. Uber. I'm glad to see that he is aware of the problems Uber is facing in London, " explained the mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, in a press release.

According to the BBC, Khan welcomed Khosrowshahi's apology.

It is worth noting that in other major United Kingdom cities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Manchester Uber continues to function without an issue.

Uber also wants to meet with and talk to TfL so that it can further improve the way it operates.

The mayor of London has proposed Monday, discussions with Uber about its license revoked with a bang Friday, the tension soothing after the apology by the boss of the company. "They have let down their drivers and customers by failing, in the view of TfL, to act as a fit and proper operator", Khan said in his latest statement.

Dara Khosrowshahi speaks at the 2016 GeekWire Summit. Experts say Uber's less intense scrutiny of drivers' criminal and medical backgrounds gives the company a substantial edge over standard taxi companies.

Uber came under scrutiny in Britain after it emerged that dozens of rape and sexual assault claims had been made against their drivers and when one of their drivers used his vehicle in a recent terror attack on Buckingham Palace.

Uber will appeal the TfL decision, which could take up to a year.
