Barty displays great sportsmanship on way to Wuhan semifinals

Barty will face either world No. 1 Garbine Muguruza, the Wimbledon champion from Spain, or Latvian French Open victor Jelena Ostapenko, seeded eight, in the semifinals.

Muguruza got off to a flying start but Ostapenko turned things around and won the final six games in a 1-6 6-3 6-2 victory - her 19th three-set win of the season.

"I played against her (Barty) this year in Rome".

"It's my first time beating number one in the world and hopefully not the last time", said Ostapenko, seeded eight. This would be something of a theme of the second set as that wing began to break down, conceding eight unforced errors as the top seed quickly fell behind 0-5.

She drops out of the Wuhan Open in the quarterfinals, losing to Ashleigh Barty in three sets.

"I know she is a very good player", Muguruza said.

But even before Muguruza took on Ostapenko, Pliskova fell 4-6, 7-6 (7-3), 7-6 (7-2), and the Wimbledon champion will go into next week's China Open in Beijing still as the world No. 1. "I think she was playing just little bit better today", concluded Pliskova. She loses her opening round match against Daria Kasatkina in straight sets. I will try to recover as fast as I can today and hopefully I can play good tomorrow.

However, the Wimbledon victor came under severe pressure on her own serve in the second and - in an nearly a complete reversal of the first - she managed to hold on just one occasion. Muguruza hasn't played her best, but she digs deep and still has that fire to find a way to victory.

Garcia beat Ekaterina Makarova of Russian Federation 7-6 (3), 6-4.

"Great match, great fight beginning to end", Garcia said.

A brief pause to dry the courts following a rain shower couldn't save Muguruza, and Linette served the set out to love in the next game.

The other semi-final will be between Maria Sakkari, who defeated Alize Cornet 7-6 (7/2) 7-5, and Caroline Garcia following the Frenchwoman's 7-6 (7/3) 6-4 over Ekaterina Makarova earlier in the day.
