US Ambassador: Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria 'part of Israel'

"I think the settlements are part of Israel", Friedman stressed.

Friedman's statements come as the Trump administration has been looking to restart negotiations between the Israelis and Palestinians.

The Trump State Department's reaction was both swift and harsh.

The US still supports a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, the State Department has emphasized, distancing itself from claims by its Ambassador to Israel that the approach has "lost its meaning" and that settlements are an integral part of Israel.

Friedman added that since the United Nations adopted Resolution 242 in 1967, "the expectation" was "that Israel would retain a meaningful portion of the West Bank, and it would return that which it didn't need for peace and security".

David Friedman's comments were met with anger and ridicule, as Palestinians remain at odds with decades of USA policy in the Middle East.

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas condemns "all acts of violence" including the killing of three Israelis by a Palestinian gunman on Tuesday in the West Bank settlement of Har Adar, an aide said in a radio interview on Thursday.

"We'll try to get it done right, not done fast", Friedman added.

"So there was always supposed to be some notion of expansion into the West Bank, but not necessarily expansion into the entire West Bank", he continued.

"His latest statement about Israel "occupying only 2% of the West Bank"... is not only false and misleading but contradict [s] global law, United Nations resolutions and also the historical U.S. position", Erekat said, adding that "Israel is internationally recognized as the occupying power over 100% of Palestine". Israel captured the West Bank in the 1967 war.

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu on Wednesday, 7 Tishrei 5778, in Jerusalem, met with US President Donald Trump's special envoy, Jason Greenblatt, and US Ambassador to Israel David Friedman.

"It should not be read as a change in USA policy".

The Palestinians have limited autonomy in 40 percent of the area, with Israel in full control over the remaining 60 percent.

"I just want to be clear that our policy has not changed", Nauert said.
