'Let's Make a Deal' host Monty Hall passes away at 96

Monty Hall, the renowned television game show host and co-creator of the long-running "Let's Make a Deal" program died Saturday at his home in Beverly Hills of heart failure, his daughter, Tony Award victor Joanna Gleason, announced. The Los Angeles Times reports that the cheerful and friendly host passed away on Saturday morning after suffering a heart attack back in June at the age of 96.

Monty Hall, in a 1969 photo, hosts em Let's Make A Deal /em . The show drew good ratings even as it jumped from network to network and into syndication.

Hall hosted the show for nearly all of its 5,000 episodes that aired on NBC & ABC.

Ever since its premiere in 1963, "Let's Make a Deal" has been a staple of television.

He is survived by two daughters - Broadway and TV actress Joanna Gleason and Sharon Hall - his son Richard, brother Robert Hall and five grandchildren. Hall recalled the time a live elephant was employed for one of the booby prizes. His family told CNN that he helped to raise close to $1 billion for charity during his life and that he spent about 200 days a year in fundraisers and charitable work.

Hall earned a degree from the University of Manitoba with the goal of becoming a physician.

Hall was inducted into the American TV Game Show Hall of Fame in 2007 and was honored for his humanitarian work by receiving the Order of Canada.

The show was remade in India - popularly known as "Khullja Sim Sim", which was hosted by Aman Verma and subsequently, Hussain Kuwajerwala.

Moving to NY in 1955, he joined forces with writer-producer Stefan Hatos, and the two created the show that would make his name. He first tested his skills on radio and, after moving to NY in 1955 and later to Los Angeles, began working on a variety of television shows.

When a People magazine interviewer suggested in 1996 that "Let's Make a Deal" would be his epitaph, Hall replied, with a wince: "You put that on my tombstone, and I'll kill you".
