Star quarterback Marcus Mariota had to depart from the game with a hamstring injury that has since been deemed "day-to-day" by head coach Mike Mularkey.

He is 6-19 as a starter in the NFL. Mularkey said there's a possibility the Titans won't know about Mariota's availability until late in the week, possibly as late as Sunday. Since the Titans only carry two QBs on their roster, however, they signed Weeden to backup Cassel in Week 5 should the aforementioned scenario play out.

Weeden, the No. 22 overall pick by the Cleveland Browns in the 2012 NFL Draft, has not attempted a pass in a regular season game since 2015.

The Titans announced Tuesday that they signed 33-year-old Brandon Weeden (he'll turn 34 in fewer than two weeks) to provide some much needed depth at the position. Because of his experience in Dallas, which uses an offensive system similar to the one in Tennessee, Weeden's transition should be smoother at the start.

Mariota was injured in Tennessee's 57-14 loss in Houston and missed the bulk of the second half after leaving the game with a hamstring injury.

The Titans, who visit Miami (1-2) on Sunday, also waived linebacker Josh Carraway and swapped wide receiver C.J. Board onto the practice squad with cornerback Kenneth Durden released. At Chattanooga, Board played in 51 games, with 47 starts, and caught 146 passes for 2,032 yards and 10 touchdowns.
