Why Microsoft killed Windows Phone

It is only now that the company has come out and said that the tech-giant will no longer be developing new features or hardware for Windows 10 Mobile.

Last summer, Microsoft cut thousands of jobs from its mobile division, and the last phone it produced in-house was 2015's Lumia XL.

Microsoft officially launched its Windows Phone platform back in 2010 in an attempt to shoehorn itself into the lucrative smartphone market with Apple and Google.

Having said that, Belfiore did reassure current users that even though Microsoft won't be focusing on this platform any more, the company will "continue to support the platform" by rolling out bug fixes and security patches.

Microsoft ended support for Windows Phone 8.1, the most popular version of its mobile operating system in July.

According to netmarketshare, a website that tracks the market share of operating systems, Windows Phone now has mere 0.87% market share. The company plans to launch their smartphones in Android or iOS so that they can compete with market trends. This seems to indicate that a "Surface Phone" is also no longer on the table. Belfiore himself switched to Android for the "app/[hardware] diversity".

"We have tried VERY HARD to [incentivize] app devs", Belfiore wrote.

Microsoft culled thousands of jobs in a trimming-down of its phone business a year ago, and the company has consistently shied away from talking about mobile in recent times. According to him, Microsoft dished out some cash to get more developers, and it even wrote apps for them.
