Trump fundraising arm launches National Anthem petition

The boss of the NFL, Roger Goodell, said on Wednesday that the players of professional league of american football should be standing up during the national anthem, without turning it into an obligation as required by the president, Donald Trump.

"Again, we believe that our player should stand for the national anthem".

"We spent today talking about the issues players are trying to bring attention to", said Goodell.

Goodell also said there were only "six or seven" players protesting.

The petition came days after NFL team owners, executives and players met in NY, where they decided that the league would not implement a rule forcing players to stand for "The Star-Spangled Banner". The meeting between owners and players ended with no agreement on the thorny issue of protests during "The Star-Spangled Banner", which has bitterly divided the sport and fans of the game.

"It bears repeating that we were remiss in not fully comprehending the effect of the national anthem demonstration occurring on foreign soil has had on the men and women who have or continue to serve our country", a letter dated October 6 from Lamping read. It was the most recent in a series of semi-regular rebukes since he first expressed his disdain for the protests at a rally in September.

"It is important for us to honor our flag and our country, and this is what the supporters expect from us", he recalled, noting that the players who protest in this way " don't do it to disrespect the flag ".

Anthem protests began at the start of last season, when former San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick sat on the bench during a preseason game's national anthem. The players then stood for presentation of Great Britain's anthem "God Save the Queen".

Goodell said on Wednesday that the question of what individual teams might do had not come up during the meeting.
