House Lawmakers Probing Obama-Era Uranium Deal

Two Republicans who head influential House committees said on Tuesday they will open a joint investigation into the FBI's handling of the 2016 probe into Hillary Clinton's use of a private email server.

"We're not going to jump to any conclusions at this time", Nunes said.

However, Democrats appear to be pushing back against Republicans regarding the uranium deal, saying it's a partisan ploy to distract from the ongoing investigations into the Kremlin's meddling in the 2016 election.

Along with the House House Oversight Committee, Nunes said the probe will look into whether or not there was an FBI investigation of the 2010 sale of a United States uranium company to a Russian company, and if so why Congress was left in the dark about it.

At the time, Clinton was secretary of state, leading one of nine government agencies comprising CFIUS.

Northeast Florida Congressman Ron DeSantis sits on the House Oversight Committee, which is conducting a joint investigation along with the House Intelligence Committee.

Nunes said that he has not spoken to the White House about the matter.

NBC reports that Tony Podesta (the brother of Hillary Clinton's campaign chairman, John Podesta) and his firm are the subjects of a criminal investigation by the special prosecutor.

The uranium deal in question dates to 2009, when state-owned Russian nuclear energy company Rosatom began buying shares in Uranium One, a company based in Toronto with interests in the United States. The State Department, headed by Clinton at the time, was also one of the agencies that approved the deal.

The first point, for example, draws a comparison between the FBI's extremely assertive updates to Congress regarding the Clinton affair and its relative silence about its investigation into the Trump campaign's alleged ties to Russian Federation. Rep. Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) arrives at a House interview with Jared Kushner - President Donald Trump's son-in-law and senior adviser - in July.

In launching this new investigation, Nunes is adding congressional muscle to a right-wing narrative that has cast Clinton as cozying up to Russian Federation.

He had "temporarily" removed himself from matters relating to the Russian Federation investigation amid Democrats' allegations that he'd broken ethics rules in his panel's Russian Federation probe.

According to Nunes, the new House probe seeks to learn a few things: "Whether or not there was an FBI investigation: Was there a DOJ investigation?" The new investigation was being driven, he said, by conversations the committee has had with informants over the past several months.
