Bloodhound auto which will hit 1000mph to be tested today

The vehicle just said, "I can do all of this".' The team will go for the record in 2019 in South Africa.

The auto will be piloted by RAF Wing Commander Andy Green and is expected to reach a positively snail-like 200mph as part of a "slow-speed" trial that will test the Eurofighter Typhoon jet engine that is now strapped to the top of it. Powered by both an EJ200 jet engine and a rocket, the record-chasing auto uses so much fuel, its fuel pump is powered by a supercharged 550-horsepower Jaguar V8 from the F-Type R.

That's not enough to break the world land speed record of 763 miles per hour (1,227 km/h), but it would allow the engineers to learn a lot more about the vehicle's capabilities.

Labelled as "low speed tests", Green will drive the auto on the Newquay airport's runway to speeds of 200mph (about 322 km/h). The thousands of spectators were treated to the ear-splitting sound of the vehicle, as well as the bright orange flame from the Eurofighter EJ200 jet engine.

The auto put in a series of "slow speed" runway tests Thursday which took the vehicle to a relatively sluggish 200 miles per hour.

"I discovered during the initial dynamic tests that to get the auto to 200mph, I would have to take my foot off the throttle at 130mph as it then carries on accelerating for another 2 seconds".
