Astros' Yuli Gurriel 'did not want to offend anybody' with racist gesture

"I see a difference in behavior from one player directed specifically at a player and a logo", Manfred said, via Scott Boeck of USA Today.

The Cuban-born Gurriel pulled on the corners of his eyes after homering off Darvish during Houston's 5-3 win Friday night.

Within minutes of Gurriel making his racist gesture it was already being shared and condemned on social media. He said he knows the Japanese are offended by it because he played in Japan in 2014.

Darvish responded as well, taking to Twitter to ask everyone to focus on moving forward from the incident.

As for his "chinito" remark, Gurriel reportedly said, "In Cuba and in other places, we call all Asian people Chinese".

"I believe based on my conversation that he understood that both the language and the gesture were offensive", Manfred said.

"I try not to care much about it, but he played in Japan and I have a lot of respect for him, so I try not to think about it too much against him", Darvish said.

Rob Manfred, the current Commissioner of Baseball, is in Houston will meet with Gurriel on Saturday before Game 4.

"Acting like that, you just disrespect all the people around the world", he said in Japanese through a translator. "I would also like to apologize to the Dodgers organization, the Astros, Major League Baseball and to all fans across the game".

"No one is ideal", Darvish wrote.

Darvish is of Japanese and Iranian descent.

Dodgers manger Dave Roberts said he was happy that Manfred dealt with the issue swiftly so that the focus can get back to playing baseball.

The league has recently suspended players caught using slurs.

Many, even some Astros fans, thought the suspension during next season was not good enough. Toronto's Kevin Pillar and Oakland's Matt Joyce each were banned two games this season after making anti-gay comments. "Obviously World Series games are different than regular-season games, and I used my best judgment as to where the appropriate disciplinary level fell".

But even if Major League Baseball elects to suspend Gurriel, he's nearly certain to appeal, which likely would delay the process so that a decision isn't made until after the World Series.
