Nationals agree to three-year deal to make Martinez their next manager

Jon Heyman of FanRag Sports reports that the Nationals have chosen Cubs bench coach Dave Martinez to be their new manager.

Martinez will be announced as Washington's new manager after the World Series. Martinez has served as Joe Maddon's bench coach in Chicago and Tampa Bay for a decade, but has never managed before.

Martinez emerged over the weekend as the Nationals' likely choice to replace Dusty Baker from a limited field of known candidates that included former Red Sox manager John Farrell and Mets hitting coach Kevin Long.

The 53-year-old Martinez was considered the front-runner to replace Dusty Baker, who was sacked last week after two seasons.

Martinez and the Nats have agreed to a three-year contract with an option for a fourth year, a source familiar with the deal confirmed. They did not meet with Joe Girardi, the World Series-winning manager let go by the Yankees last week.

In a conference call earlier in October, Nationals General Manager Mike Rizzo called Baker "a Hall of Fame-type manager", but said that the expectations of the team had grown along with their success. The Rays won the American League pennant in 2008, and he was a part of the Cubs' curse-smashing World Series victory a year ago.

The 53-year-old Martinez, who played in the majors from 1986 to 2001, joined the Cubs' staff after the 2014 season. As a first-time manager, Martinez is also about as opposite of Baker as it gets.

In the Nationals, Martinez will inherit a team with a stellar bullpen, MVP-caliber player Bryce Harper and a strong lineup, but it remains an organization unable to break through the NLDS.
