When The Leapfrog Group published its spring 2017 Hospital Safety Grades in April, Pennsylvania as a whole was slotted as the 34th safest state in the country. Harborview Medical Center got a "B" and two hospitals - Olympic Medical Center in Port Angeles and Deaconess Hospital in Spokane - got "D" grades.

"Since the Leapfrog Hospital Safety Grade launch in 2012, our mission has been to increase awareness of hospital safety concerns among consumers, as well as light a fire under hospitals and community leaders to be champions for change", said Leah Binder, Leapfrog president and CEO. Four local Lehigh Valley hospitals made the list.

SC ranked 13 among the 50 states, based on the number of hospitals that earned an "A" compared to the total number of hospitals in the state. "Our passion for patients allows us to create one of the state's safest hospital environments". Although patient safety should be a top priority for all hospitals.

The Leapfrog Group says it uses 27 measures of publicly available hospital safety data to assign A, B, C, D, and F grades to more than 2,600 U.S hospitals twice a year.

Bridgeport Hospital was the only location in CT to receive below a "C" grade.

United Medical Center: F "The Leapfrog survey data was collected before the Vertias health system took over the hospital", a spokesperson said. But the state agency has a full consumer report of all the in hospitals available on its website.

Both Douglas and Paulding hospitals consistently receive top scores, the release stated. "At the very least, everyone should get an A on patient safety". Other states with significant improvement include OR, going from 48th in 2012 to eighth today, Hawaii from 36th to third, Wisconsin from 44th to sixth, and Idaho from 19th to fourth. "We congratulate the clinicians, Board, management and staff of McDowell Hospital for showing the country what it means to put patient safety first".

One state appears on the state rankings for the first time today, the state of Maryland.

Of the 44 hospitals graded in Maryland, 2.3% - just one hospital, Howard County General Hospital in Columbia- earned an "A", compared with 31.6% of hospitals graded nationally.

Leapfrog gave 159 hospitals in the U.S. D grades and 15 hospitals received failing marks.
