The products were sold at Menards, Montgomery Ward, Sears, The Home Depot, Walmart and other department, home and hardware stores nationwide, and online at Amazon.com, ShopKidde.com and other online retailers for between $12 and $50 and for about $200 for model XL 5MR.

In 2014, extinguishers didn't work for emergency responders who were trying to fight a vehicle fire after a crash.

The CPSC says one person has died while trying to fight a fire with a faulty Kidde extinguisher.

"You're better off to have no fire extinguisher than a defective fire extinguisher", former California chief fire marshal James McMullen told CBS News.

The recall involves 134 models of Kidde fire extinguishers manufactured between 1973 and 2017. Canada is also recalling nearly 3 million additional extinguishers.

The company says consumers can contact Kidde to request a free replacement. The new extinguishers contain metal parts instead of plastic. It included models previously recalled in 2009 and 2015. No proof of purchase is required, however, a model number, year of manufacture, and the unit's date code and serial number must be provided.
