Target selling fidget spinners with potentially risky levels of lead

If you're planning to gift a fidget spinner this holiday season, take heed - the US Public Interest Research Group has found dangerously high levels of lead in some spinners sold at Target. The U.S. Public Interest Research Group (PIRG) Education Fund found some problems with a major retailer's sales of this hot new toy.

PIRG found 33,000 parts per million (ppm) of lead in the center circle and 22,000 ppm in the arm of one model called "Fidget Wild Premium Spinner Brass".

But one of the fidget spinners with a unsafe amount of lead - the "Fidget Wild Spinner Premium Brass" - is actually labeled for kids almost half that age. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission says fidget spinners are a choking hazard in a warning for parents.

The federal limit is 100 parts per million (ppm).

MASSPIRG, a consumer advocacy group, alerted Target and Bulls i Toy, the distributor.

Representatives for Target and the manufacturer, Bulls-I-Toy, told the Washington Post that the $19.99 gadgets are not sold as children's products.

"Even small amounts of lead in toys can be ingested when transferred from fingers to mouth or from fingers to food", said national lead expert Helen Binns, MD, pediatrician at Ann & Robert H. Lurie Children's Hospital of Chicago and Professor of Pediatrics at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine.

But now a consumer advocacy group says two types of fidget spinners being sold at Target could be unsafe.

Currently, the toxic fidget spinners are still available both in toy aisles at Target stores and on its website. "All of our product (s) are tested and comply with CPSC safety standards".

Lead exposure is damaging for young children because of its impact on development.

MASSPIRG said that this defies common sense, since millions of children play with fidget spinners, regardless of whether or not they are marketed to them.

"The two fidget spinners cited in your letter are clearly marked on the package 'appropriate for customers 14 and older, ' and are not marketed to children", Target's Jennifer Silberman wrote to the researchers in an email shared with Business Insider.
